Yesterday I was invited by my daughter to come and speak at show and tell; imagine that, lol. For some strange reason they thought I was a rapper or something and had some really cool stories to tell about going to cool places. This by far was an amazing dad moment for me seeing the excitement…

Every night before I go to bed, I always go to my front door to make sure my porch light is on. It has always bothered me to look outside and notice everyone on the block has their porch light off.

Mainly because of the dark. I hate the dark. I hate being in the dark, I hate seeing the dark. I hate the very fact that dark even exist.

Dictionary defines Dark as:
Lacking or having very little light.
Sullen or threatening.
Difficult to understand; obscure.
Concealed or secret. Mysterious.
Exhibiting or steaming from evil characteristics or forces, sinister.

Yea… No. I don’t like the dark.

I don’t like to look outside my door and be reminded of the satanic influences that lurk over my community. I don’t like being reminded through the misunderstanding, miscommunications, and people’s faliures to be honest about their real feelings that you and I have this form of darkness within our own hearts that The Lord uses our circumstances to reveal.

It’s in the dark when I look out my window at times and I see ongoing drug transactions on my block. It’s in the dark that my car is flagged down on some corners by girls (and women) who think that I want to participate in sexual activity. It’s in the dark your motives are questioned, people assume things about you, your used, slandered, and taken for granted. It’s in the dark you hide your own sin, choose not to confess your crap, play the escape route in heated conflict, point fingers, attack others and sit comfortably in your own pride.

I hate the dark, which is why I always chose to leave my porch light on. Others may turn it on to prevent crime, it’s my way of reminding myself that darkness cannot overcome Light.

Though everything around me and sometimes even within me is the presence of evil, my porch light reminds me of the perspective that darkness will not alway exists, broken trust will not always be around, damaged relationships will not always eventually happen.

The Light is more powerful! To Him I labor and serve, as much as I possibly can with all my might, it’s to Him that the darkness is not dark and the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light to Him (Psalm 139:12) He always sees what’s going on in our hearts and in our communities.

In times of sadness, anger, heavy tears over this community frustrations in relationships, I must remember Jesus who says of himself, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

So, yea, I gotta keep my light on, it’s the only sanity I have at this point.

Last night was such an amazing night for our community. It was our 4th annual Purity Ball and this year we had the privilege of witnessing a godly couple renew and celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary vows. Our kids were challenged and encouraged to wait for God to send them a love as rich as we witnessed last night. We prayed and ask God to keep our kids pure and hungry for Jesus and all His plans for them. I truly believe God will change the culture of my hood through these babies. The seeds that are being planted God will cause growth and fruitfulness in His timing. They’re dreaming again, their talking about godliness, their learning how to trust God with their future. I’m so thankful and honored for the past years we’ve hosted this bible study and event. Ill take the next year off to write my own purity curriculum for urban kids. Please keep us in your prayers. God is very good and I know for a face Jesus is real!! To Him be the glory!!

And all the while you keep a vigilant watch over your heart to see if you are in the law of Christ. Here are two tests of how you are doing in this delicate balancing act. I close with these:

Are you becoming more worldly minded than they are becoming spiritually minded? If so, you have probably crossed the line of the law of Christ. Christ does not call you to lose your holiness, but to gain theirs.
Is your passion for winning your friends and family growing, or is it shrinking as you become all things to them? If it is shrinking, then you are not in the law of Christ at that point.
Here is the sum of the matter: Christ died to set us free. Free from the wrath of God, and free from the loveless limits of the law. Free for love and eternal life. Are we using our freedom to make this good news plain? Or are we so separatistic that we have no connection with unbelievers; or are we so worldly they don’t know we have anything radically different to offer?

O may the Lord grant us to use our freedom to become the servants of all, that we might by all means save some!
